One of the main reasons that unlimited local and long distance is no longer available in many areas is that Federal and State regulators have made it nearly impossible for providers to compete with the Baby Bells (Verizon, Quest, Bell South, and Southwestern Bell). When the Telecommunications Act of 1995 was first passed by Congress and signed into law by the President, there was a small but significant increase in alternative providers for local service. This was done primarily via a shared platform called UNE-P.

Under the Bush administration, however, a combination of court orders and Congressional changes to the Act have basically allowed the Baby Bells to price competitors out of the market by preventing them from acquiring at reasonable wholesale rates. What quickly followed was the demise of the UNE-P platform. The net result is that most consumers no longer have the range of choices that they had as recently as 5-10 years ago. This is a shame. If this situation changes, we hope to be able to offer options of this kind once again.
